Ptosis

What is ptosis? Dropping of upper eyelids is known as ptosis, it is not a disease, but a symptom arising from various conditions,it can be one sided ( unilateral) or affect both sides ( bilateral) .It can be congenital ptosis arises mainly from one of the three reasons that includes weakness of muscles or swelling of the lid . Levator, palpebrae are the two muscles weakness in which causes ptosis. Nerve damage affects the oculomotor nerve, if not treated well in time, ptosis may lead to lazy eye or astigmatism.
Types of ptosis
Myogenic ptosis arises from muscles weakness.
Neurogenic ptosis arises from a problem in the nerve pathway controlling movement of the eye lid muscles.
Aponeurotic ptosis from Edna or tumor of the upper eyelids.
Neurotoxic ptosis caused by snake bites, cobra, kraits , and Taipans.
