Teeth are less susceptible to caries if an optimum amount of calcium and fluorine are ingested while they are developing. Fluoride combines with some of the apatite crystals in the tooth structure to make it stronger. You get the maximum benefit when it is consumed from birth until the permanent teeth have all appeared which may be between the ages of 11 and 13 .But ingestion of excessive fluoride before eruption, while the enamel is forming, may cause permanent mottling of the enamel.
