Gin is an inflammation of the gingiva (gums) , characterised by swelling, redness, changes of normal contours and bleed. The gums get swollen up and the crevices between the gums and the teeth deepen, forming gingival pockets. Gingivitis can be acute, chronic or recurrent.
Causes
The biggest single cause is poor dental hygiene which is evident from deposits of bacterial plaque and other local factors like tartar. Food impaction, faulty dental restoration and breathing through the mouth play important secondary roles, although few people realize this, it is the present day dietary habits which are often to blame for the condition. A diet of processed foods like white bread, pizzas white sugar, ice cream, over cooked veg, chocolates and sweets is, sadly deficient in organic mineral matter that is so essential for the body's healthy upkeep. To rectify this deficiency, nature extracts some of the mineral matter from our teeth, the richest store house of organic mineral matter within the body and uses it for the required purposes.
Gingivitis is commonly noted at puberty and during pregnancy, presumably caused due to endocrine factors . IT may also be the first sign of a systemic disorder with lowered tissue resistance, for example, hypo vitaminosis, allergic reactions to food or drugs, hormonal disturbance, and the use of paan, or tobacco.
