Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which the blood has lower than normal number of blood cell fragments called platelets.
Platelets are made in bone marrow along with other kinda of blood cells. They are colourless cells which travel through blood vessels and stick together. (clot) to stop any bleeding that may happen if a blood vessel is damaged. Platelets also called thrombocytes because a clot also is called a thrombus.
When the blood has a few platelets, mild to serious bleeding can occur. Bleeding can occur inside the body (internal bleeding) or underneath the skin or from the surface of the skin (external bleeding)
A normal platelets count in adults ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. A platelet count of less than 150,000 platelets per microliter is lower than normal. If the blood platelet count falls below normal, this condition known as Thrombocytopenia.
Signs and symptoms
Superficial bleeding into the skin that appears as rash of pinpoint sized reddish purple spots (petechiae) usually on the lower legs.
Blood in urine or stools
Usually heavy menstrual flows
Profuse bleeding during surgery or after dental work.
Bleeding from gums or nose
Causes
Decreased production by the liver in liver failure
Sepsis, systemic viral or bacterial infection of bone marrow megakaryocytes as well as immunological shortened platelet survival.
