Preventive To avoid air swallowing in the bottle fed babies, the rubber teat should be kept full of milk all the time during the feed. The fermentation in the abdomen can be avoided by modifying the food in quality and quantity. All root vegetables (potatoes, carrots, beet root etc) should be avoided. Bread toast, biscuits, etc may be allowed. Soothers which are by far the most effective may be used but these should be cleaned and sterilised. Homoeopathic medicines for colic
Colocynth This ranks foremost in the treatment of colic. It is useful aganist griping pain around navel. The child doubles up from pain as the pressure ameliorated. There is marked anxiety on the face. The remedy should be used in low potencies 6 and repeated say, every half an hr during the attack. It is experience of me that Nux vom has a synergistic action on colocynth and their mixture greatly enhances their effect, though I seldom uses any other combination in practice. Colocynth and Nux vom 6 given every half hr usually relive the agonising pain after 2 doses and hence merit trial by Homoeopaths .of course it may be emphasised that the symptoms of Colocynth should be present, otherwise failure is sure to stare in the face of the prescriber.
Chamomilla. It is great friend of child in grip of the colic and has a reputation of an instant pain soother when the symptoms agree. The red line symptoms of the remedy is that the pains are unbearable The child's cries would arouse the neighbors from sleep. The child cannot be quientened except by carrying it and patting it constantly. The pain is of tearing nature and aggravated at night and by hot applications.
Cina.   The Cina colic generally occurs towards late evening or early part part of the night. The pain is of Twisting nature around navel making a child twist in anguish. The abdomen is bloated hard. There is considerable itching of the Nose and anus.
Cuprum met. Violent colic with cramps pain which is ameliorated by hard pressure but aggravated by heat. Many times the external application of Cuprum met 6 dilution (liquid) on the navel helps in passage of gas, there by according instant relief of the patient.
Dioscorea.  The pain radiate from abdomen to back, chest and arms and are worse by bending forward or while lying down.The child requiring this medicine will throw its head backward and will stiffen and arch like a bow. Great flatulence with rumbling, tongue coated.
